A Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was in town and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass those hours in an establishment that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more folks with such compassion.
It seems I seemed out of place because a woman noticed me wandering around the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover sandwiches she had from her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to sleep.
Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she accepted as a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my own unawareness and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet very grateful.
I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
