Democrats Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Response
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a joint declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our country with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme digital publications and withdraw his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Response
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this United States and took an vow to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Political Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and determine all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members advising them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
