The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
