Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor remarked when questioned about seriously considering a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as governor ends in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any determination is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary disclosed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and threatened eliminating the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," Duffy declared, after a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office responded in a last month's comment responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A recently conducted survey showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, the governor commented while traveling several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the American people."
