RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
