The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
