A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
